Earth Sheltered
Characteristics of Earth Sheltered homes:
  • Uses less lumber and more concrete
  • Less expensive to build
  • Energy efficient
  • Open floor plan
  • Low maintenance
  • Durable, resistant to storms and tornados

Earth Sheltered homes are designed to be partially buried under ground or have earth
piled-up against the exterior walls. The structure is very sound being more concrete and steel than lumber. Instead of a conventional roof, the home is capped with a heavy layer of earth usually exposing only the front elevation.

Earth sheltered home plans became popular in the mid 1970’s when energy efficiency emerged as a popular social and economic concern. Earth Sheltered houses are one of
the most environmentally friendly homes available as they are designed to use passive
solar energy and heat from the earth. Since temperatures a few feet below grade are
not subject to extreme variations in temperature between winter and summer, or day
and night, heating and cooling costs can often be substantially less than comparable
above ground structures. In addition to energy savings, Earth Sheltered homes offer
open floor plans, a quiet environment, and superior safety from damaging storms such
as tornados.

Earth Sheltered homes are not commonly found in mid-Michigan because their style of construction does not lend itself well to typical subdivision environments.
