  • Often features dormers
  • Multi-pane windows with shutters

A simple, story-and-a-half American classic originating in colonial New England. The Cape Cod has always been a popular style and was built in large quantities following World War II when returning GIs were in need of affordable housing. Due to its compact design the Cape Cod could be quickly built at a reasonable price.

Size generally ranges from approximately 1000 to 2500 square feet with two bedrooms on first floor and one
or two bedrooms on the second level.

Distinctive features include a steep roof with side gables, 1 1/2 stories, angular ceilings in the second level, and a central front door with a small porch.
The basic design comes in many variations and often features dormers, bay windows and window shutters.

Many Cape’s have a full-length dormer constructed across the rear of the second floor to create larger bedrooms.
