Characteristics of Bungalow homes:
  • One-and-a-half stories
  • Low pitched roof
  • Built-in cabinets, shelves and seats
  • Nice woodwork
  • Full front porch which may be enclosed
  • Open floor plan
A compact one-and-a-half story house having an open floor plan with combined living and dining rooms and two small bedrooms. The kitchen is at the rear of the home. There is usually a large front porch which may, or may not be enclosed.  Square footage may vary from 600 to 1400 square feet. Larger if there have been additions. Most Lansing bungalows were built between 1910 and 1930.

The interiors of bungalow homes often feature nice woodwork and have a feeling of simple elegance and comfort.  The open floor plan make the bungalow easy to clean and well suited those who are mobility impaired.

The attic in many of these houses has been adapted to living space, with access usually through a first floor bedroom. Second floor ceiling heights may vary from six to eight feet.

Second floor living space can only be counted in the overall square footage if the floor-to-ceiling height is at least seven feet and the distance across the ceiling measures a minimum of two feet.
